Each school should have a specific plan (Fire Safety, Fire Evacuation, and Lockdown), developed in consultation with appropriate fire (and ideally law enforcement) officials, on how to best respond to emergency incidents.

The State of Colorado has adopted the 2021 edition of the International Fire Code and that code is applicable to every public and charter school in the State. The State’s adopted Fire Code requires schools to conduct a fire drill within ten days of the first day of school and once a month thereafter. The Code does not allow for the substitution of any other type of drill (e .g.
lockdown, lockout, or shelter) for a fire drill.
